[Chess_General_Discussion] re dedicated chess computers

Views on Dedicated chess computers.

Hello, Just joined the list. Personally I find dedicated chess computers to perhaps be of more worth to young people coming into the game than the all singing and dancing high flying PC programs, or leastwise used in tandem with them. No kid is ever going to have a chance of beating one of the big programs, and that can be demoralising and a big off-put. A dedicated chess machine will always play at the level which you determine it to, there is no need to dumb them down, for that does not work well on a PC program, and nothing is running in the background as on a PC to influence the play from one game to another. Thus, a kid has a chance of winning occasionally, which they need to do for encouragement, and one can always assess ones progress and consistency from a given time allowance of play. Also of course there is the three dimensional aspect of the game, not all people like paying on a flat screen and staring at a computer for a couple of hours. So both kinds of programs have their use, but one must not forget to play human beings, because that is what it is all about, and far more fun in so doing; and you cannot cheat or take back moves when playing a human being.
