Need Chess Strategies for CheckMate?

This Forum has a great discussion going on regarding advice for someone who is having trouble with his checkmate. I'll quote the question he posts:

I have a serious problem with my chess. I seem to have no ability to get my opponent into checkmate. I have read a few websites and read a couple of books, but in practical everyday play I cannot pull off a mate. (I do better in person, my main concern in on the computer engines. This leads me to chicken out on the FICS a lot.) I understand that there are several mating combinations that you are trying to go for. But should I be concentrating on saving pieces for a final attack? Should I be playing for position in my middle game and seeing where the pieces land for the assault? If I try reckless I seem to do better at first, but my combinations are really lacking. Can anyone give me a place to start? Are there puzzles to solve? What can I do to get my playing back on track?
