 > Hello, Just joined the list. Personally I find dedicated chess
computers to perhaps be of more worth to young people coming into the
game than the all singing and dancing high flying PC programs

"high flying" PC programs don't "sing and dance". They play extremely
strong chess and come with excellent game databases, training
utilities, and coach functionality. There is nothing better than this
for any player at any level, regardless of their motivation for
 playing chess.

For an expert rated (or above) tournament chess player such as myself,
playing against the program is probably not of interest to you. You
want to use it to assist you with analyzing your tournament games and
preparing openings. You also want to use the database games, often
many of them will be annotated, to assist with your study.

Weak novices who want to play the program and not be humiliated may
adjust the engine strength to an appropriate level for their liking.
There is nothing a dedicated chess computer can do that a PC program
can't do. Everything you said is wrong, actually. dedicated computers
are much worse at handicapping than pc programs which are at least a
bit more intelligent in the way they reduce the strength. If you want
3D that's easy. You have two choices....either get a DGT board or just
relay the moves from your screen to any regular chess board. It
doesn't take a chess genius to figure out that one. It just takes
 rudimentary common sense.

Dedicated chess computers are all but worthless. Literally their only
value is in the way of being an antique, or nostalgia piece. They're
extremely weak. They have no opening books with which to learn
openings. They have no endgame tablebases with which to study
endgames. They have no game databases at all.
