Hi Kate,

You need to get the first move to the problem correct, to be able to
continue. You should try another move.

But I have a problem with this site. Maybe I'm just
not seeing it but how do we send in the answer? I can
see where we enter one move but is that it? I went
to Problem 1, put in my first move and it said I was
wrong.
Help please?

If You Want to Start Them Young..., November 28, 2007
By Paco Ahlgren

While my own work is probably not best suited for children, much of it IS set
around the game of chess. And why shouldn't it be? I started playing when I was
six. Yet for all the years I've been involved with the game, I would wager that
if I'd owned a copy of HOW TO PLAY CHESS LIKE AN ANIMAL back then, today I'd
probably be as proficient a player as its authors.

If you've got kids and they're interested in chess, this is the book to give
them. But don't be surprised if you find yourself learning an opening or two
yourself -- and maybe even enjoying the process...

A unique introduction to chess openings for children and adults, November 12,
2007
By Bruce Bain "Semper Fidelis" (Englewood COLORADO)

Life Master Brian Wall and co-author Anthea Carson have produced a unique
introduction to chess openings for children and adults.

I must first say that this book is in LARGE PRINT, which I use in my own
beginner chess lessons. There is nothing that turns off beginners in chess so
much as to see a long series of moves in tiny print, That's like reading a
credit card contract! Well this book says FOOEY to small print!

The book requires no prior knowledge of how to play chess, as the student will
be taken through explanations of piece movements, terminology, and most
importantly, how to Read & Write Algebraic Notation. [How chess moves are
recorded in a game.] This is the key to chess improvement.

The openings introduced are characterized by the animal names associated with
them: Dragon, Alligator, and so forth. Children will be delighted with the
fantastic illustrations which are large and colorful. Some of the unusual
openings are very capable of giving the player an edge in any competition.

The authors encourage students to invent their own unique chess openings and
explore them freely, rather than playing chess by rote memorization.

My impression is that when this first edition will be sold out, [I think it
already is!] a second edition will be soon be in demand, and it will include
additional material not included in the first edition. This is a book whose
theme can be easily expanded into a series of books.

Anthea Carson and Life Master Brian Wall have poured their love into this work,
which is so very unlike the multitude of chess books for children. The novelty
of the presentation places this work in a class of its very own. Co-author
Anthea Carson has two small children of her own, and her son has to his credit
a FIVE-HUNDRED POINT upset just in the past year. It indicates that the mother
knows how to teach chess for sure!

An extensive chess glossary is provided which will enlarge the student's scope
of understanding. This colorful book is nicely priced at just under $20.00 and
I think it is well worth the price.

Mark my words. Public demand for this book will grow in the coming months.

Great fun! Awesome illustrations!, December 8, 2007
By Timothy Brennan (Colorado Springs, CO United States)

----------------------------------------------------------

This book is unlike any other that I have seen in the chess world. The book
introduces the reader to a bunch of chess openings that for the most part have
animal names. I am a tournament chess player - currently around 1740 USCF
rating, and have found myself getting obsessed with some of the openings in
this book, and playing them over the board. While they are not played at a
Grandmaster level, they are certainly playable for class players, and definetly
for children, and are a TREMENDOUS amount of fun!!

The illustrations in this book are amazing. The illustrator is a professional
and the colors are fantastic. Everyone kids, and adults will love the pictures.
Some of the pictures would make nice posters to hang.

This book would make a nice Christmas present for a kid learning the game, or
for someone that likes unusual chess openings. Help other customers find the

[Chess_General_Discussion] World Chess Championship round 2

As expected, things heated up somewhat for this round.

Kramnik played the open Catalan against Morozevich and offered a pawn
with the novelty 8.0-0 (normal is 8.Bd2). Kramnik then sacrifices a
knight with 13.exd5 and acquired a passed pawn on the c-file with a
very strong light-squared bishop defending it, and a complicated
position was the result. Morozevich missed the defensive plan of
16...Rb7 which prevents the advance of White's dangerous c-pawn. After
16...d3, Kramnik played the intermediary 17.c7! exposing an attack on
the rook at a8 and attacking the knight on b8. Exchanging off the
queens gives White an easy won ending an exchange up. Morozevich tried
to mess things up with 17...Qd4, but after 18.Qa4 Black may not
capture the rook on a1, because after 19.Qxb4, bearing down on the f8
rook, Black cannot deal with all of the threats. For example, if
19...Nd7, 20.Bxa8 Rxa8 21.Qe4! attacking both Rook on a8 and Bishop on
e6. The passed c-pawn is still a menacing threat as well. 18...Nd7,
19.Be3 Qd6 20.Bxa8 Rxa8 21.Bf4 Qf8 22.b6 and now it's just a matter of
technique with White's connected passed pawns. If 22...Nxb6 23.Qc6
wins a piece.

[Chess_General_Discussion] World Chess Championship round 1 [All Games Drawn]

Anand - Gelfand was a Petroff that ended in a short draw. Looks like
Vishy wasn't in the mood to fight today. Hopefully that will change as
the tournament progresses.

Kramnik - Svidler looked like it was going to promise some fireworks,
as the Botvinnik variation of the semi-slav was defined (5.Bg5), but
instead of going in for complications by playing 6.Bh4, Kramnik chose
the safer, but less ambitious exchange line 6.Bxf6. This game was
short and sweet as well and a draw was agreed upon after move 23.

Morozevich - Aronian was a Queen's Indian defense (nobody seems to be
allowing the Nimzo Indian these days). Morozevich went into the
endgame a pawn up, but Aronian characteristically defended well and
this game ended in a draw also after 25 moves.

Grischuk - Leko was a Ruy Lopez in which Peter seemed interested in
playing a Marshall Attack after 7...0-0. But Grischuk avoided this
invitation it with the safe 8.h3 and yet ANOTHER short draw was the
result.
